What do we actually talk about in therapy?

“So what problems do people bring to you in your work (therapy)?”

- asks my 17 year-old niece on the dinner table.

I think to myself , how do I answer such a big question, with a simple one line answer that is appropriate, short, and meaningful to this young person. ( And I am already impressed by her curiosity to know more about the field of mental health.) As I respond to this question, I decided to write down a few of points that may help you understand a bit more about therapeutic conversations.

For those of you having similar curiosities, here is what we discuss in therapeutic conversations, more or less, at Unhyphen Psychology.

Conversations in therapy room may begin with exploring the client’s landscape of identity, their strengths and weaknesses. It may involve exploring one’s personal and social identities, such as cultural, racial, gender, sexual orientation, and career identities.

Individuals may encounter challenges such as confusion, self-doubt, societal pressure, discrimination, and conflicts with family or cultural expectations during their identity development journey. These challenges can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, and difficulty making decisions. Therapy can provide guidance and support to individuals facing these challenges, helping them gain clarity, build resilience, and find self-acceptance.

Here are some of the other ways in which mental health professionals can support you through your life challenges.

Building self confidence

Therapy offers various approaches to support individuals in building a positive and resilient identity. These may include cognitive-behavioral techniques, self-compassion exercises, mindfulness practices, and narrative therapy. By exploring personal values, strengths, and aspirations, counseling can help individuals develop a strong foundation for their identity and foster a sense of purpose and well-being.

Career transitions and find satisfaction in your work

Career transitions can be stressful and challenging. Therapeutic conversations can assist you in identifying your strengths, interests, and values, helping you make informed decisions about your career path. A mental health professional can provide guidance on setting achievable goals, developing a career plan, and enhancing your job search skills. Through counseling, you can explore new possibilities, overcome obstacles, and find fulfillment in your professional life.

Navigating incidents of trauma in life

Trauma refers to an overwhelming and distressing experience that can have lasting psychological and emotional effects. Therapy plays a crucial role in helping individuals heal and recover from trauma. It provides a safe and supportive environment where individuals can process their traumatic experiences, gain a deeper understanding of their reactions.

Mental health professionals can help individuals develop effective strategies to manage symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and flashbacks. Additionally, counseling supports individuals in rebuilding their sense of safety, trust, and self-esteem, ultimately promoting post-traumatic growth.

Adjusting to parenting and life transitions

Parenting and life transitions, such as divorce, breakups, new relationships, or new identities and roles, can bring about significant changes and challenges. Theraputic conversations can provide support and guidance during these transitions, helping you navigate the emotional complexities, develop effective coping strategies, and make informed decisions for yourself and your family. A professional can assist you in managing stress, enhancing communication, and fostering healthy relationships.

Estranged family relationships

Estranged family relationships can be deeply painful and complex. Therapeutic conversations can support you in navigating these challenging dynamics, providing a compassionate and non-judgmental space to explore your feelings, gain insight, and set boundaries. A therapist can help you process emotions, heal from past wounds, and make informed decisions about reconnecting or establishing healthier relationships.

Relationship issues and improving connections with others

Relationships play a vital role in our lives, but they can also be challenging. Therapeutic conversations can help you navigate relationship issues by providing effective communication strategies, conflict resolution techniques, and fostering a deeper understanding of yourself and others. Through therapy, you can learn to develop healthy boundaries, enhance emotional intimacy, and build stronger connections in your personal and professional relationships.

Adjust to a new country/culture after migration

Adjusting to a new country and culture can be overwhelming. Therapeutic conversations can assist you in navigating this transition by providing support, coping strategies, and a space to process your experiences. A mental health professional can help you manage cultural differences, overcome language barriers, address feelings of homesickness, and build a sense of belonging in your new environment using a culturally responsive framework.

Individuals experiencing loneliness

Therapy provides a supportive and nonjudgmental environment for individuals struggling with loneliness. A mental health professional can help clients explore the underlying causes of loneliness, develop social skills, enhance self-confidence, and identify strategies for building meaningful connections and relationships.

Remember, seeking counseling support is one of the many courageous step towards personal growth and healing. A qualified mental health professional can provide individualised support tailored to your specific needs and empower you to overcome life’s challenges.

If you resonate with any of the issues mentioned above, I encourage you to reach out to a professional counselor who can guide you on your journey towards a happier and more fulfilling life.

In hope & support,

Bimba
