Smruthy Nair (she/they)
I am a psychologist registered with AHPRA and an associate member of the Australian Psychological Society.
The values most important to me in psychotherapy are best practice principles that are also evidence based, culturally responsive, person-centred, inclusive, and feminist. My work relies on using an anti-oppression and systems focused lens, and I seek to bring this perspective in the areas of community upliftment, policy analysis and practice development.
I love working with young people and adults identifying with diverse cultures, abilities, bodies, and sexualities. I have a particular interest in working with people in cross-cultural contexts, and working through complex and cultural trauma.
While I work with individuals in therapeutic contexts, I also provide consultation to organisations interested in deepening their commitment to equity and inclusion.
A psychotherapist since 2011, in addition to clinical practice I have experience working in training and advocacy in education, public health, communications, multiculturalism, and family violence.
I trained in India and worked across rural and urban centres with children and adolescents, families, school systems, and communities. In 2012 I founded and successfully ran a grassroots organisation in Chennai working in the areas of mental health and disability rehabilitation, while also training and delivering capacity building within the education and corporate sectors.
Smruthy speaks English, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi.
